WERKELIJKHEID en MEDIA
Mijn werk komt voort uit een poging grip te krijgen op de werkelijkheid, zoals deze door verschillende media wordt weergegeven.
Indien de werkelijkheid al kenbaar is, is dat de werkelijkheid van het moment. Maar wat gebeurt er, als je die werkelijkheid door middel van media, op een andere plaats op een later tijdstip wil laten zien, zoals bijvoorbeeld het geval is bij een nieuwsuitzending?
Een gangbare opinie is dat fotografie in staat is de werkelijkheid waarachtig en objectief vast te leggen. Recent zijn fotografen ontslagen omdat zij photoshop gebruikt hebben om hun foto's te verbeteren.Maar in hoeverre is het mogelijk om via media de werkelijkheid weer te geven? Verwordt niet alles tot fictie als je het filmt of fotografeert? Welke factoren bepalen of je een beeld gelooft of juist wantrouwt? Of een slag verder: maakt het überhaupt uit of iets echt is of is het voldoende als het alleen maar echt lijkt?
Het medium fotografie heeft altijd een natuurlijk verbond met de werkelijkheid gekend, maar in onze huidige beeldcultuur verwijst veruit de meeste fotografie naar iets dat de werkelijkheid moet voorstellen, een geënsceneerde werkelijkheid, zoals in reclames.
De schilderkunst staat daarentegen dichter bij fictie (in verf is alles mogelijk), toch blijken aan fictie gerelateerde media in staat de werkelijkheid vlijmscherp weer te geven.
Door gebruik te maken van diverse media, probeer ik de relatie media & werkelijkheid vanuit zoveel mogelijk verschillende standpunten te onderzoeken.

REALITY and MEDIA
My work is an attempt to get to grips with the way the concept of reality is displayed in the media. If reality can be depicted at all, this can only be a momentaneous reality. But what happens to the concept when media present reality at another time at another place, for example on CNN?
Some believe photography and film are able to capture reality in a true and objective way. Photojournalists have been fired because of having pimped their photo's with photoshop.
Can media display reality at all? Doesn't everything transform into fiction when filmed? Which elements in an image are responsible for 'believing' a picture or not believing it? Does it really matter if images aren't real, isn't it enough when they just look real?
It is my belief that there is no difference in the way reality is depicted through any medium. Whether it is film or paint, a novel or a documentary, they are equally (in)adequate.
Photography has always had a natural bond with reality, but in our current society photography is more and more linked to fiction. Paintings have always been related to fiction, but paintings (and other media related to fiction) are also capable of capturing reality in a very convincing way.
By using different kinds of techniques in my work, I try to explore and understand the relationship between media and reality in as many ways possible and from a maximum of viewpoints.
